Google Fingers

Shadow DigitsEvery scholar who uses Google Books has benefitted from the mostly invisible labor of countless library workers. Every so often, I come across evidence of the bodily dimension of digitization: human digits captured by the camera. I find these disembodied fingers (with condom-like coverings) oddly touching and unintentionally artistic.

(Long after posting this montage, I discovered that I’m merely one of many users captivated by “Google fingers.” There’s a Tumblr page devoted to the “Art of Google Books” that caught the attention of The New Yorker.)
