Songs in the key of tree:

Tree songsTo a degree hard to appreciate today, trees once occupied a vital place in American popular culture. In the era of the parlor room, when middle-class families purchased pianos by the thousands and sheet music by the millions, Americans sang sentimental (and sometimes racist) songs about trees. Here are some examples from Johns Hopkins University’s Levy Sheet Music Collection, arranged to show some common themes:

Row A: Songs about once famous historical trees revered as patriotic icons
Row B: Songs that link trees with home and the ideals of domesticity
Row C: Songs that link trees with mothers and motherhood
Row D: Songs about romance under (or in) trees
Row E: Songs in the minstrel genre that use trees to embellish racial stereotypes
